The Ultimate Summer Camp Packing List

For many kids, summer camp is a rite of passage that marks their independence away from home, friendships that won’t soon be forgotten, and memories of campfire songs, roasted smores, canoe rides, and endless wilderness to explore.

That’s why a proper camping checklist should prepare your child for every activity, no matter the weather, so they can partake in all the activities and fun, rain or shine, thunderstorms, and oh my!

Our ultimate summer camp packing checklist covers all the bases with performance and functional gear you’ll surely want to pack. We’re not talking flashlights because you already know that. Instead, look at the camping essentials list which we’re certain will make for very happy campers.

Camp Checklist

The following camping must-haves are ideal for every summer camp your child will travel to, whether that be sports camp, horse riding camp, swim camp, or a traditional outdoor exploration camp.

swimwear

Swimwear

Summer camp kids should be prepared to be near water. If not a pool, there might be plenty of outdoor rivers or lakes that they’ll take a dip in to cool off in and play in. Be sure to pack along the following so that their water excursions are fun and enjoyable.

UPF 50+ Apparel

UPF 50+ clothing means your child can play up to 50x longer without the risks of exposure wherever skin is covered. So, add that layer of protection and be sure to add UPF 50+ protective gear to your child’s camping checklist, whether they’re discovering waterfalls in Washington or skipping rocks down south.

footwear

Footwear

Your child’s duffel or trunk should include several types of footwear they can wear no matter what the activity. Shoes that are easy to put on and take off and that have Velcro closures are helpful for little ones that might not have mastered the art of tying shoelaces.

Remember to have your child break in their new shoes before packing them up to avoid sending them off with a pair that’s uncomfortable for their foot shape or that may cause blisters. You’ll want to invest in quality shoes made from durable materials. And when it comes to hiking or trail exploration, waterproof and dirt-repellant shoes are a must. Add these to your camp packing list.

Outerwear

Outerwear

You can never be too prepared, and this is especially true when it comes to the weather. Your child might be playing outside when a few raindrops suddenly turn into a torrential downpour.

Depending on how close they are to camp, your child could quickly end up soaked, cold, and nothing short of miserable. And we know you don’t want that.

Be sure to pack outerwear that’s lightweight, airy, and that can be tied around their waist when not worn. Or opt for something that is waterproof or made from a comfy fleece that’ll keep your child cozy and warm.

To prepare your child for any sudden temperature changes or weather conditions, these items make the cut on our camping essentials list.

Camp apparel

Apparel

Whether they’re exploring trails or going on nature walks, the proper outdoor clothing is a camping must-have. Breathable, durable, water and dirt-resistant materials will perform better and be easy to wipe clean, so your kiddo isn’t stuck wearing wet, muddy, or itchy materials. Our Xylitol cool activewear takes t-shirts up a notch and helps keep the kids comfier when it is hot outside. Comfort is key, so include the following on your summer camp packing list.

Socks

Essentials

Let’s talk about the basics. These are all the comfy things that your child will rely on daily, and you should pack plenty. These basics don’t exactly have to be basic, though. Invest in some quality separates and be sure to send your child off to summer camp with a good amount of the following.

mag glass

Fun camping must haves

In addition to all the apparel and outerwear musts, your child will also want to pack up some entertainment items that will keep them busy or engaged with other campers in their downtime. Your child’s camp will send along a list of suggestions or approved items, and it’ll look a little something like this.

  • Books

  • Pens

  • Binoculars

  • Magnifying glass

  • Stationary and pre-stamped envelopes

  • Disposable camera

  • Bracelet making supplies

  • Card games
