What to Wear Skiing or Snowboarding (for Kids)

Introducing your children to the ski slopes is an incredibly proud, exciting, and nerve-wracking, moment in any parent’s life. Especially if you are huge fans of the lifestyle yourself and want your offspring to enjoy it. But there’s one sure-fire way to turn them off skiing for life early on; being cold and wet. Keeping them comfortable, snug, and safe with the right clothing means they can concentrate on having fun.

1. Base Layers

Start with base layers. Avoid cotton - which can cause a chill when it gets wet! Thermals are a great option if you're heading to a high-altitude resort or adventuring during the coldest part of the season.

2. Waterproof Ski Jacket

A ski jacket is a must for any youngster on the slopes. Reima’s ski jackets made specifically for kids are not only waterproof but also windproof and dirt-repellent yet breathable. The responsibly-sourced down and feather filling will keep kids warm whether there’s a little nip in the air or it’s as chilly as minus 30 – with a little more layering underneath, of course! Snow locks on the cuffs and the waist prevent cold air and snow from getting up into the jacket and other added extras like goggle pockets and an inner chest pocket ensure plenty of detail and practicality.

3. Waterproof Ski & Snowboard Pants

Children inevitably find the most precarious situations to get themselves in and fall over more times than you’d care to imagine - meaning snow pants or bibs are key. All of our children's ski pants are made of a durable, windproof, and breathable material with a water and dirt repellent finish. Extra durable reinforcements have been placed on those parts of the legs that can be easily worn out. All seams have been sealed waterproof and most pairs feature adjustable detachable suspenders for a personalized fit.

Don’t Forget, Safety First!

With a title like that, you may think we’re going to talk about helmets and goggles, which you should always have for a day on the slopes. But there’s another safety concern to take into consideration when buying children’s skiwear. Research recently undertaken by The Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA), revealed Reima to be one of just three European children’s wear manufacturers to offer completely toxin-free children’s clothing. Learn more about Reima’s Sustainability efforts here .

Altogether NIVA tested 34 textiles from different European brands and discovered 31 contained environmental toxins. Some of the products tested contained different per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). PFAS are man-made compounds used in water-repellent clothing. They are a public health concern as, in high concentrations, some have been linked to adverse health effects in laboratory animals.
